Over the past four decades the mobile phone has come a long way.

On the 3rd of April 1973 a phone call was made in New York by a Motorola employee.

The first mobile phone was aptly named the “brick” because of it’s sheer size. It was 9 inches tall, included 30 circuit boards, talk time of just 35 minutes and a total charging time of 10 hours!

In forty years the worldwide telecoms industry has a total revenue of over £800bn and sees no sign of slowing. The average mobile phone no longer functions solely as a calling device. Mobile phones are able to stream video, download maps, send emails, and even play games or take photos and videos.

The mobile phone is the universal device of our time, which begs the question? What will the mobile phone be like in another forty years time?
