This week has seen some amazing action in the Capital One Cup as both Sunderland AFC StadiumSunderland and Newcastle came out on top against lower league opposition. Even though both North East Football clubs managed to make it through into the third round, it wasn’t plain sailing for the Magpies or the Black Cats. Sunderland’s Tuesday night game against League One MK Dons was a thrilling encounter with an amazing comeback.

Things didn’t start well for Sunderland AFC at the Stadium of Light as after only 7 minutes as MK Dons loan signing Bamford struck a vicious left footed effort past Sunderland debutant Vito Mannone. This put Sunderland in the lurch from the beginning and as the game went on things didn’t get any better. The sides went in at the break with the score remaining 1-0 to MK Dons and no doubt the home team got a few stern words from manager Paulo Di Canio in the dressing room.

After half time things continued to get worse for Sunderland as after 55 minutes Izale McLeod landed a perfect chip to put the visitors two goals up. After this goal things picked up for Sunderland AFC as they looked to try and turn the game around. It wasn’t until the 78th minute when new signing Jozy Altidore managed to score his first goal for the club and attempt to claw back the deficit. It seems that this first goal was the catalyst to Sunderland finding their scoring boots.

Substitute Connor Wickham made a big impact as 3 minutes from time he managed to bring Sunderland AFC and MK Dons back level. This didn’t leave much time for a comeback but Sunderland clearly didn’t need it. Wickham almost immediately scored his second of the game with a mere 2 minutes between his clinical strikes. Not content with 3-2, winger Adam Johnson finished the scoring for the Black Cats making it 4-2 to Sunderland AFC.

Whilst Sunderland took home the win Di Canio didn’t look very happy with his team’s performance leaving it so late to show what they were made for. Sunderland are at home again in the 3rd round against Peterborough. Let’s see if they can make it through to the next round and keep the cup dream alive.
