A Tesco supermarket in Consett has raised £1,000 from holding charity events. The shop, on Genesis Walk, held a sponsored walk and a disco to generate the cash. The money will be divided between three charities: the Willow Burn Hospice, Real Choice College and Headway UK.

Ronnie Allison, Tesco’s Community Champion, who organised the events, said, “We wanted to donate the money to charities that genuinely benefit Consett and we all know someone who has relied on the support of these amazing organisations.”

The disco – attended by Tesco’s employees, their families and friends – took place at The Demi, on Albert Road. The money raised at the event came from the sales of tickets, donations from the guests, refreshment sales and a raffle.

The sponsored walk consisted of a hike from Consett to the picturesque village of Rowlands Gill.

The manager of the superstore, Gary Ewart, stated, “It was wonderful to watch the team come together and work so hard to raise funds for three charities that do incredible work in our area. We’re grateful to the local community for their support in sponsoring the walkers and attending the disco, helping us to raise this fantastic total. It’s good to know we can always count on their support when we’re trying to give back to our local area.”

Real Choice College is a private institution that works with young people who have learning difficulties. The college aims to develop the independence and communication skills of their students, help them take qualifications and, where possible, help them into employment. Headway, which has over 125 groups and branches across the country, supports people who have suffered brain injuries, their families and their carers, as well as professionals in related fields. The Willow Burn Hospice, which has a charity shop in Consett, provides high quality care to people whose illnesses are no longer curable.

The Tesco store has been involved with quite a few other local charities through their Community Champion programme, including Northumbria Blood Bikes, Dementia Friends, and the Blackhill Club Community Farm. The store has also given away free fruit to local families.
