Harriet Harman in ConsettAccompanied by Consett MP Pat Glass, Harriet Harman held a forum to get a better idea of the struggles older women in our community often suffer.

The meeting was set up to ask the local people of Consett about their views in relation to the Labour Party’s Old Women’s Commission which has been set up to help the future Labour government to find a way to help older women across the UK in their work, their personal lives and financial security after retirement. This meeting came about after research from the House of Commons that states over 21,000 older women across the North East will be affected by the upcoming welfare reforms. Women born between 1952 and 1953 will not be eligible for the single tier pensions as they are due to retire in 2017.

Pat Glass invited the important Labour politician to our region to get a better idea of how these changes would affect older women in our region.  When asked about coming to Consett Harriet said, “I was more than keen to respond to her (Pat Glass) invitation and discuss some of the issues that she and I are taking forward to the Older Women Commission.”
