Last week was an interesting weekend for the North East teams in the Premier League. With a fair few twists and turns, things didn’t go to plan at Stamford Bridge for Newcastle United and Sunderland didn’t even get started. Here are last weekend’s EPL highlights.EPL Highlights

Sunderland were due to play their first home game of the season last weekend against newly promoted Reading but due to the adverse conditions up here in the North East the pitch was in no state for any sort of football action. This game will be rescheduled for another day.

Newcastle may have been playing but they didn’t really get started against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. After a hard game against Tottenham last week and a Europa League match in the searing heat of Athens, Newcastle was hoping to grab another 3 points at Chelsea. This wasn’t that case as Fernando Torres was on top form scoring from a perfectly executed Eden Hazard free kick. Torres was then brought down by new boy Vurnon Anita in the box which ended up with the ever present Eden Hazard to get his first goal for Chelsea from a spot kick. This week’s North East EPL Highlights have not been too great.

Sunderland are heading to Wales for their next match at the home of Swansea City who are showing some impressive form under their new manager Michael Laudrup with new guy Michu showing he has what it takes to make it in the EPL with 3 goals in 2 games. Newcastle are back in Europe for their next match but this time Atromitos are coming to the Toon for this second qualifying leg. With the score at 1-1 after the away leg, Newcastle look like taking the home leg for themselves.
