In this week’s EPL highlights, Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC had a mixed bag of results to contend with as both teams could only muster up a draw. Sunderland played Swansea City on Saturday where a first half brace from new debutant Stephen Fletcher helped Sunderland secure a point. With ex Newcastle man Wayne Routledge scoring in between Fletcher’s efforts Sunderland went into the dressing room with a one goal lead.

After another promising half from both teams, it was the ever present Michu for Swansea who brought things level with a superb finish to leave the game 2 -2. Sunderland fans shouldn’t be too upset with this result as it looks like the black cats could be gaining some steam and their first win of the season shouldn’t be far round the corner. Stephen Fletcher looked sharp up front giving Sunderland a great attacking edge during the match. By tighteningEPL Week 3 up the defence, Sunderland could become a dangerous opponent in the EPL.

In other EPL highlights, Newcastle played at home against the seemingly struggling Aston Villa who had failed to pick up a single point in their first two games. Newcastle got off to a slow start with very little to comment on as Aston Villa didn’t look up to very much either. Villa dictated the pace for the majority of the opening parts of the game with Newcastle looking pushed under pressure. It was only after 22 minutes when Villa’s Clarke scored from a well executed corner kick that the game had any sort of pace injected.

Newcastle were still looking dull after going one nil down but a few chances did fall either way, after the interval things started to pick up. Newcastle looked like a new team with aggressive pressing and a new lease of life. At 59 minutes Hatem Ben Arfa fired off a beauty of a shot from outside the box which flew past Guzan to bring the score back to 1-1. Newcastle had a number of attempts to take the game in the close with a Yohan Cabaye free kick being agonisingly close to winning the match in the last minute of extra time.  Newcastle will be annoyed with this result as much better was originally predicted.
