2012 has been a year of sporting success for the United Kingdom. Coined as “The Year of Sport”, 2012 has seen British athletes triumph across the globe in a multitude of different arenas and show the rest of the world what this small nation can do.  Apart from the disappointment of Euro 2012 where the England team failed to deliver the goods once again, 2012 has been one success after another for Britain’s athletes around the world.

On Saturday 19th of May 2012, Chelsea FC walked out to a crowd of 62,000 people in Germany to play the formidable Bayern Munich on their home turf in the most We take a look at the year of sportimportant match of all, the Champions League final. After a tense battle which ended in penalties, Chelsea took home the honours winning the title for the first time in their history and beating the mighty Barcelona on the way. Another triumph in this incredible year of sport.

Along with success for British football, June was a great month in the year of sport as Sports Personality of the Year Bradley Wiggins took to the Champs Élysées winning the iconic Tour de France cycle race. As if this wasn’t enough, Wiggins also went out and took Gold in the Time Trail at the Olympic Road Cycling. A deserving winner of Sports Personality of The Year if there has ever been one.

The London 2012 Olympics were a sight to behold as the nation was gripped by Olympic fever. Team GB were under pressure being the home nation but this wasn’t going to stop them from going for gold. With the likes of Jade Jones, Mo Farrah, Jessica Ennis, Andy Murray and their compatriots taking home an amazing 29 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze medals between them; the London 2012 games were seen as a resounding success for the nation.

To top of this amazing year of sport, Scottish Tennis Star Andy Murray defied the odds and won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in September. The first British man since Fred Perry to win a Grand Slam, Murray defied the odds to take his first Grand Slam against Novak Djokovic in New York. Along with his Olympic gold medal, Murray had a great year in 2012.

It wasn’t just the UK enjoying a fantastic year of sport in 2012. Team Europe headed out to the USA to take on their arch rivals in the Ryder Cup; one of the biggest contests in the world of Golf. After a shocking start, team EU went out on the last day playing to win. With amazing performances for Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter and the rest of the team, the EU went out and won the cup on US soil retaining their title from the last competition. Even golf skeptics rejoiced as the triumph was both inspired and unexpected creating a fantastic atmosphere for the thousands of travelling fans in Medinah Illinois.
