North east Football: Aston Villa v Newcastle

Last night’s North East football saw struggling Newcastle United take on an underperforming Aston Villa side in a clash which would have big bearings on survival in the EPL North East Football Highlightsthis season. The phrase “a game of two halves” has never been more applicable to a game of football as each 45 had their own distinct flavours. It was Newcastle who was in control from the first whistle showing their intention to come away from the tie with an emphatic first away win.

Pardew’s men played an outstanding first 45 showing what they are capable of at their best.  Their rhythmic passing game had Aston Villa well and truly beaten and this was demonstrated when a beautiful pass from new addition Moussa Sissoko caught Villa off guard allowing Papiss Cisse to score a great opening goal for le Toon army.  Just over 10 minutes later star man Yohan Cabaye capitalised on a bad clearance to score what may be considered Newcastle’s goal of the season. The long shot left Brad Gouzan behind to double the Magpies lead. Things were looking too good to be true for Newcastle and after the half time break Villa brought them back down to earth with a thump.

With Andreas Weimann and Gabby Abonglahor on after the break Villa looked rejuvenated and tested Tim Krul with some fierce shots. Only 3 minutes into the half Mathieu Debuchy was penalised for a tackle in the box which later was found to be extremely soft and lucky for the home team. Christian Benteke scored the spot kick and Villa felt like they had a chance. After testing Tim Krul and Newcastle’s defence with a heavy barrage of long balls Newcastle finished on top and grabbed their first away win of the season! Let’s hope the new lads through the door can help them climb the table even further. Villa on the other hand has now dropped into the relegation zone. The North East football didn’t stop there with our other EPL team out in action.

North East Football: Sunderland v Swansea City

Sunderland were playing host to Capital One Cup finalists Swansea City at the Stadium of Light last night with Sunderland looking to extend their lead against North East rivals Newcastle. Sunderland never looked like winning this one with chances for the Black Cats being few and far between.  Swansea had a large amount of possession throughout the game leaving the visitors comfortably in the driving seat.

Despite being in control, Swansea City failed to make their chances count with Dyer, Chico Flores, Danny Graham and Michu all failed to take the 3 points home from the Stadium of Light. After a somewhat boring show, the gamed ended 0-0 with both sides taking a share of the points. Both Martin O’Neil and Michael Laudrup would have liked to have taken three points from the game but a draw was always going to be the likely outcome.  This was a night for North east football that would best be forgotten.
