Newcastle United left it late once again before taking all three points against London club Fulham. This match had a big bearing on Newcastle’s state in the league as they had been hanging dangerously close to the relegation zone after a somewhat lacklustre season so far. Fulham have been doing OK in the league sitting in 10th spot but would be looking to at least take a share of the points home from St James’ Park.

Almost instantly after kick off Fulham star man Dimitar Berbatov looking like giving the London side the lead after a great shot went just over the bar. This wasn’t the only Newcastle United Toonattempt Fulham had to take the lead in the first half with a number of shots being blocked by the defence and saved by the ever acrobatic Tim Krul. Newcastle looked to be suffering from a European hangover after the game against Benfica in Portugal last Thursday. To make things worse, Newcastle United were hit with another injury as Davide Santon was taken off the pitch to be replaced by the versatile Dutchman Vurnon Anita at left back. The two teams went back to the dressing room locked in a 0-0 deadlock.

After the restart Newcastle United looked like a different team. Pushing hard up the field, Newcastle had a huge number of shots on the Fulham goal causing untold mayhem as a shot from Anita ricocheted off Frimpong and just hit the crossbar. Cisse had a number of good chances but just couldn’t convert his efforts into goals. Fulham nearly took the lead when Berbatov again challenged the Newcastle keeper with a deft header but Krul got a good hand to it keeping things square.

It wasn’t until extra time when a shot from Yohan Cabaye was caught by Cisse who skilfully put the ball past the Fulham goalkeeper. The Newcastle United fans went insane as the goal scorer jumped into the crowd in sheer jubilation. Alan Pardew did exactly the same as the fans grabbed him in pure happiness.

These 3 points have moved Newcastle United up to 13th place in the Barclays Premier League with 39 points. This means the safe zone of 40 points in now all but sealed for Newcastle United allowing them to shift their focus to the Europa League clash against Benfica on Thursday night. The Toon need a 2-0 win to make it through to the semi finals but this will be a big ask against such formidable opponents.
