League Cup Highlights

This week has seen some fantastic midweek football courtesy of the Capital One League Cup with a large selection of teams from all across the football league. With teams like Carlisle facing off against giants like Tottenham Hotspur, the League Cup can always provide an upset with Leeds United well and truly beating Everton knocking them out of the competition.  There are always twists and turns in the secondary cup competition in England and our favourite North East teams had a fair share of them in their ties this week.  Let’s see how their League Cup highlights panned out.

Sunderland drew lower league opposition in the shape of MK Dons with ex Newcastle man Alan Smith playing for the successful lower league team after a loan spell in his later days at Newcastle United. Playing at Stadium MK, Sunderland looked ready to be a big name casualty as Lee Cattermole was sent off for the 5th time in his time playing at Sunderland after unleashing a dangerous tackle which could have caused some serious damage. One man down, Sunderland was going to have to work for this victory. Despite this setback, Sunderland pushed onwards and were awarded a free kick on the 53rd minute which Craig Gardner skilfully curved over the wall and past the goal keeper.

To make their League Cup highlights even more eventful, James Mclean evaded a number of tackles to slot home a second goal for the Black Cats to seal their victory and getting them through into the 4th round of the competition where they have drawn Middlesbrough. It’s been a fair while since we have seen this derby match due to Middlesbrough leaving the Premier League but we can expect this to be a match filled with thrills and spills.

North East League Highlights

Newcastle United had to play Manchester United in the 3rd round of the competition with both sides fielding subpar teams featuring a number of fringe players as well as some regulars who are returning from injury.  Manchester United started off with a strong attack featuring Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez whilst Newcastle reintroduced the recovered Chieck Tiote and Fabrico Coliccini. The game started pretty evenly with both teams getting their fair share of chances throughout the first half. Man United looked more comfortable in their game with Wayne Rooney playing perfect passes around the field and the deadlock was broken just before half time by Brazillian Anderson with a nice strike from the edge of the box.

After half time, Newcastle looked more positive, pressing hard and pushing up the field but against the run of play Tom Cleverly scored a second for Manchester and the game looked out of Newcastle’s reach.  A double substitution brought Shane Ferguson and Papiss Cisse to the field and 65 seconds later, the young left back lay in the perfect cross for Papiss Cisse to get a great header and his first goal of the season.  Newcastle tried hard to equalise with many shots just squeaking past the post and one amazing overhead kick hitting the bar. In the end the Magpies just couldn’t get an equaliser and crashed out of the cup in their first game.

The next league cup highlights will only contain Sunderland with their much awaited Derby match against Middlesbrough but the North East derby will not want to be missed. Newcastle are out, Sunderland are through.
