To cap off over 60 years at Belle Vue, Consett AFC will be playing a friendly match against Newcastle United’s under 21 squad on the 15th of May. After getting the support of consett afcfierce rivals Sunderland AFC to play at the stadium tonight it seems right that the remaining giant of local football will also lend a hand to say farewell to the old Belle Vue ground. It’s amazing to see these behemoths of the Premier League getting involved with the sport on a local grass roots level.

Newcastle’s under 21 team is filled with names which you may recognise from Newcastle’s first team this season due to the horrific injury list which has plagued the team all season long. Expect to see young players such as Gael Bigrimana, Adam Campbell and January signing Kevin Mbabu included in the line up next Wednesday. This will be a test of the strength of Consett AFC who have been having a strong end to the season. This game will be a great way to end a long spell at the faithful home of Consett AFC.

Consett AFC are also playing tonight against Sunderland AFC’s reserve team to help see off the old ground. The first game to be played at Belle Vue when it was first erected in 1950 was against Sunderland so this game tonight has a historic background. The signatures from the original team sheet from 1950 which includes a number of international players is still framed in the club bar.

Both of these matches against the Premier League elite will be an occasion to savour as our small town will be graced by some of the up and coming players in North East football. Be sure to get down to Belle Vue tonight or on the 15th to show your support for the team.
