The summer of 2013 has been filled with stunning, family-orientated events to Brass Fever Hits Consettcater for every taste throughout County Durham. One of the biggest being the now annual Streets of Brass Festival which now also includes the historic and traditional Durham Miner’s Gala. Mainly, through the various traditional brass bands such as the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band.

However, the real success story has been the expansion of the festival from the streets of Durham City to the outlying towns such as Seaham, Spennymoor, Sacriston, Stanley and Consett by means of the “Outreach” aspect of the festival.

The Outreach programme (Brass:Crescendo) for children and young people, communities and local musicians, allows for the opportunity to work with international musicians and experience Brass in an entirely exciting and new way.

This year saw the members of Oompah Brass, amongst many others throughout Durham; appear in the Consett and Blackhill Park. With their novel versions of popular pop tunes, this award-winning ensemble has produced unique versions of songs as diverse as Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Britney Spears’ Toxic.

The festival has become such an important part of the North East’s annual events calendar that it now attracts major acts from around the world and major sponsors and supporters such as EDF Energy, Arts Council England, Youth Music, Prince Bishops Shopping, Esh Group and, of course, Durham Council and Partnership Groups from the likes of Spennymoor, Stanley and Chester-Le-Street programs. This also included their respective town councils as Programme Partners.
