A big thank you to everyone who participated in and supported this annual event at Shotley Bridge Cricket Club on Bank Holiday Sunday. The morning clouds gave Stewart Weightman Cupway to the midday sun and the event was well under way by 1pm.

Derwentside Round table organised the six a side cricket match while members of The Rotary Club of Consett set up Tombola, Raffle and fund raising stalls in aid of WillowBurn Hospice. Add this to the Cricket Clubs Beer Festival and it proved to be a recipe for a grand day out.

The cup was won by The Centurions’ for the 2nd consecutive year and was presented to the winning team by Ron Weightman – Stewart’s father – who is in his 90th year and an avid Cricket fan.

Michael – Stewart’s son and his daughters Katherine and Emily helped organise the event with their mother Lorraine who is a member of The Rotary Club of Consett. Their friends and family turned out in force to support the day as they have in subsequent years to make the event the hit it is.

Stewart Weightman, who died of cancer in 2006, was a member of Derwentside Round Table & Stanley Rotary Club and was known for his commitment to fundraising for local charities. So it is fitting that this day is celebrated in his memory.

Michael who works for Sky Sports has obtained matched funding for the Charity Event which will help to boost the total amount raised. Cricket players paid £5.00 each to play in the tournament and this money is added to the pot. The final figure is not known but the total will be excess of £1000.

A great day for a great local charity.
