Supporters of the two largest North East football teams share a passionate rivalry always trying to get one up on the opposition. Newcastle United ToonEven when it comes to the younger players at either club, the desire to win comes above all. Whilst Newcastle United have had some bad times in the Derby as of late, the FA Youth Cup squad made sure to put this to rest. In an adrenaline fuelled match at St James Park, Newcastle took the bragging rights against Sunderland advancing into the next round of the competition.

The main talking point of the match has to be the performance of former Wallsend Boys Club player and number 9 Jonathyn Quinn from Ashington. The young striker who cites Dennis Bergkamp and Alan Shearer as his heroes put in a near faultless performance putting 3 goals past Sunderland in the 4-0 victory. Adam Armstrong was the other goal scorer in the 4 goal rout showing Newcastle off to be the far superior side. The game held at the first team stadium has an attendance of 3501 including 300 Sunderland supporters turned out to support the kids in the derby.

Another Newcastle United player who deserves a mention is central defender and Medomsley resident Ryan McKinnon. It’s fantastic to hear of a local lad who has played on the biggest stage of North East football. He and his partners in the Newcastle defence have to be praised for keeping a clean sheet against their fierce rivals Sunderland.

In the world of £90 million transfer fees and completely over the top contract negotiations it is fantastic to see the youth of the game getting the chances they deserve to develop into the first team. Let’s see if Sunderland can pick themselves back up from this heavy defeat and Newcastle United can progress further in the competition.
