History Day Out in County Durham

The 10th annual County Durham Archaeology Day will be held on Saturday the 8th of March. There will be a range of talks happening from Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon settlements to Roman forts. All research will be backed up with books, displays and further information. The main topics of the day will include Anglo-Saxon Seaham, Roman fort at Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle and the Iron Age site at Chilton, near Ferryhill.

Hers a little about what archaeology is:

Archaeology studies human prehistory and history from the development of the first stone tools in eastern Africa 4 million years ago up until recent decades.  (Archaeology does not include the discipline of palaeontology.) It is of most importance for learning about prehistoric societies, when there are no written records for historians to study, making up over 99% of total human history, from the Palaeolithic until the advent of literacy in any given society.

The aim of the project is to widen access to archaeology through exhibits, talks and opportunities to speak to experienced archaeologists. To encourage individuals and groups to become more involved with the archaeology in and around their local area. To protect and manage the remains of the archaeology in the country. Other aims of the team is to record, protect, research and interpret the archaeology and built heritage of County Durham and the Borough of Darlington for the benefit of local communities, visitors and researchers.

The archaeology team provide archaeological advice to anyone from, members of the public, developers and the local planning authorities in and around the Durham and Darlington borough areas. The team also produce an annual magazine – Archaeology: County Durham – which is published March every year.
