No Smoking Day with the County Durham NHS Stop Smoking Service is looking to help people win the war on cigarettes.

The event itself is taking place on the 12 March and team members will be out around the County until then talking to people and offering help and advice to quit smoking. They will also be visiting several specific locations to hold small events and talks with the public on Monday 10, Tuesday 11, and Wednesday 12 – including Castledene Shopping No Smoking DayCentre in Peterlee.

This year’s theme for no smoking day is ‘V for Victory’. Encouraging people to start, continue, and win the fight to quit smoking. Councillor Lucy Hovvels, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for safer and healthier communities, said: “Each year, hundreds of thousands of smokers choose No Smoking Day to attack their addiction and take a stand against cigarettes.

A huge number of people smoke in the UK alone, and as a result more than a quarter of cancer deaths in the UK can be attributed to smoking cigarettes and causes around 80% of all deaths due to lung cancer. No smoking day is a great way for people considering trying to quit or or those that have been trying to quit for years.

The sense of community and support between multiple people trying to quit at the same time can be the deciding factor to eventually win the fight against cigarettes. One of the most significant statistics from previous smoking day events is that of 52% of smokers that heard of the event, over 20% made an attempt to stop smoking.

If you’re considering quitting then now could be the time to give it a try. For help and support to stop smoking, contact the County Durham NHS Stop Smoking Service on 0800 011 3405, drop in to one of the events around 12 March, or follow the No Smoking Day social media accounts by visiting their website.
