The campaign – that began on Tuesday, March 18 – that trended through social media asks women to post pictures of themselves with no make up online – as well as nominating friends and family members to do the same – and hash tag no make-up selfie. Cancer Research UK were bombarded with unexpected donations yesterday (Wednesday) most come through text message. They also saw a rise in donating at shops around the UK as well as visits to their site.

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the UK and to show their support women across the country have not only been posting pictures and donation money to fund research but have been sharing information about signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

The trend started with author Laura Lippman, who posted a picture of her bare face – showing support to actress Kim Novak who was criticised for her looks. She has since become associated with the charity cancer Research after people were adding #breastcancerawareness to their no make-up selfie.

Cancer Research UK noticed the trend on Twitter and tweeted ‘We’re loving you #cancerawareness #nomakeupselfie pics! The campaign isn’t ours but every £ helps #beatcancersooner’.

The trendy campaign also sparked a Facebook page – No Make-Up Selfie for Cancer Awareness – which gathered more that 220,000 ‘likes’ at the time.

The #nomakeupselfie trend has recently been highly criticised for having very little to do with breast cancer and for not raising money for charity, but Cancer Research UK thinks otherwise.

The director of communications at Cancer Research UK said that although Cancer Research didn’t start the Twitter trend, they are very happy to see everyone get involved to help raise awareness to family and friends.
