Responsible business week takes place from 31 March to 4 April, led by Business in the Community.

Businesses across the UK are getting involved with responsible business week and fundraising for a variety of charities. In the north east a number of businesses have donated employees time to fundraise and themselves donated directly; over 1000 Northumbrian Water employees took part and the company contributed to a number of organisations by sharing 1% of pre-tax profits.responsible business week

National chain Greggs are among the large businesses to take part within the north east, over 500 employees donated a days working time to contribute to charity fundraising and Greggs topped up the contribution by adding £1.65m to the total, making a very significant impact to the recipients.

The purpose of responsible business week is to inspire businesses to do more for charities and organisations across the UK, including volunteering employees time to fundraise for charities on the businesses behalf – something which a great deal of businesses have chosen to do, with over 10,000 hours of work being freely given by employers.

Some of the most prominent people taking part in the weeks events include Vincent De Rivaz, Chief Executive of EDF Energy, who will be speaking at an event tonight (1 April) to discuss a number of sensitive topics such as climate change, renewable energy, and energy security. Other events taking place throughout the week cover topics ranging from businesses history, sustainability, and corporate responsibility.

Eversheds also have a base in the north east and gave 3,000 hours of volunteer and charitable work, as well as donating over £500,000 through their in-house charitable trust. Additionally, Eversheds offers a scheme for employees that allows them to donate a portion of their wage directly to the trust – which the business handles separately to ensure the most money goes directly to the organisations.
