Newcastle became the focal point for a gathering of celebrities from the worlds of film, television and sports as the first ever Newcastle Comic-con BUMBLEBEE AND SOLDIERNewcastle Film and Comic Con touched down in March.

This was billed at the largest ever collector’s event and featured hundreds of traders selling items ranging from film props and trading cards to magazines and celebrity autographs.

The main attraction for most of the crowds attending was the autograph signing area where the guest celebrities, authors and sports personalities were situated.

Amongst the most popular of those attending were Sylvester McCoy and Paul McCann of Dr Who fame, Chris Judge from “Stargate:SG1”and Carl Weathers from the “Rocky” and “Predator” franchises. Plus, the human face of the “Predator” and the actor inside the costume, Ian Whyte.

Also in attendance were convention favourites and “Star Wars” alumni such as Darth Vader himself, aka Dave Prowse, Kenny Newcastle Comic-Con CHRIS JUDGE SAYS HIBaker (R2-D2), Julian Glover (General Veers) and others from the likes of “Farscape”-Virginia Hey and the ever popular and fan favourite, Danny John Jules, better known as Cat from Red Dwarf and currently the detective drama “Death in Paradise”.

As well as the entertainers from the world of film and television, there were several sports stars in attendance as well.

Newcastle United favourite Peter Beardsley and former boxing champion Frank Bruno being amongst the most popular from the sporting guests.

The Comic-Con events are extremely popular and this was the first to be held in Newcastle with another already pencilled in for 2015 due to the demand experienced at this event.

In fact, and against many expectations, the first ever regional Comc-Con attracted thousands of fans and enthusiasts that, for most of the opening Saturday, there were two-hour entry queues around the arena.

Adding to the demand for autographs and the experience of meeting the stars, were the “Fan Zones”, guest talks with Q & A sessions, specially arranged photo-shoots and other public friendly attractions.

In addition to the “human” stars of the event, there were also several mechanical “stars” in attendance such as K.I.T.T. from Nightrider and “Bumblebee” from the “Transformers” movie series.Newcastle Comic-con - IAN WHYTE AND CARL WEATHERS Q&A SESSION

Overall, this was a show for the young and the young- at- heart. And, judging by the response to this year’s event, next year’s show, which may be a pre-paid ticket event only due to the demand, can’t come soon enough.
