Jack Colback realises childhood dream by signing for Newcastle United.

The midfielder came up through the ranks through the Sunderland Academy, joining at the age of 10. His career to date has consisted of many years at Sunderland and several loan periods to Ipswich Town – and, of course, now an unexpected transfer to local rivals Newcastle United announced yesterday (Monday 9th June)

It may have come as a surprise to many fans, but Jack Colback has always supported Newcastle – regularly attending games at St. James’ Park in his younger years. In an interview with nufcTV Colback said:

“To come to a team I supported as a boy – my hometown team – is a really special one for me.”

To add insult to injury, from the perspective of many Sunderland fans, this was a free transfer. With the midfielder coming out of contract with Sunderland recently he was on offer for free to any club grabbing his attention, in this case it turned out to be Newcastle.

This move also marks the first direct transfer Sunderland AFC to Newcastle United in over 15 years, since Lionel Perez. That’s no surprise considering the significant backlash towards everyone involved in the transfer; Newcastle United, Sunderland AFC, Jack Colback himself, and even Gus Poyet.

Newcastle United weren’t the only club showing an interest in the midfielder, with the end of his contract a number of clubs made a move to signing the 24-year-old. West Ham, Everton, and Hull City were just some of the clubs registering a serious interest in bolstering their squad with the Newcastle lad. There were no guarantees that Colback would be leaving Sunderland at all, if the club had managed to agree to a salary increase

Regardless of the politics of football, we wish Colback all the best at Newcastle United and certainly hope for a quick end to the backlash on social media since the news broke yesterday.
