Upcoming Movie Releases for July 2014 shows some pretty massive sequels to hugely successful franchises.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

To kick things off we’ve got Transformers: Age of Extinction, set for UK release on 5 July. This blockbuster is the sequel to last year’s massive hit Transformers: Dark of the Moon released in 2013. Age of Extinction is set 5 years after events in the prequel and sees the Transformers no longer trusted by the human population – after an order to destroy all remaining transformers is issued we skip four years and find a surprise in store for a mechanic (Mark Wahlberg).

The teaser trailer for Age of Extinction was nominated for ‘Best Summer 2014 Blockbuster Trailer’ but lost out to Godzilla. With a $210m (£120m) budget, this is the big boy of this selection – you’ll have to see for yourself whether this upcoming movie lives up to expectations.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Directed by: Matt Reeves

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is yet another sequel, this time to Rise of the Planet of the Apes which was the first in the new series of films based upon the original Planet of the Apes series. The prequel was also released in 2011, much like Transformers, and was nominated for a variety of awards ranging from ‘Best Visual Effects’, to ‘Best Writing’, and even ‘Best Movie’ from IGN’s Best of 2011. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set to be just as successful as the prequel; after a brief and tenuous peace between the apes and human population tensions rise and Ceaser’s (Andy Serkis) apes lives are threatened once more.

A budget of around $120m (£70m) may not seem like much in comparison to the new Transformers title, but I think you might be in for a surprise at just how far that budget can stretch. This upcoming movie is coming to the UK on 17 July.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Directed by: Dean DeBlois

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is, you guessed it, the sequel to How to Train your Dragon – a comparatively low budget animated film based upon the popular book series of the same name. The sequel is the second of what is to be a trilogy with the final movie planned for 2016 release. The upcoming movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, takes place 5 years after the prequel and sees our hero and friends exploring more and more of the world, slowly discovering a larger conflict between humans and dragons that he finds himself in the middle of.

Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson star as just some of the hugely talented voice acting team, and the final theatrical trailer, ‘Master’, was nominated for a Golden Trailer Award for Best Animation/Family. Get yourself to cinemas around the UK on 11 July to catch this special family film.
