At the end of May 2014, 16 brave fundraisers from the North East undertook the challenge Marie Curie Trek of a 10 day hike up the formidable Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for the Marie Curie Hospice located in Newcastle. During this arduous challenge its safe to say these dedicated people had the experience of a lifetime.

The Hospice based in Newcastle is a vital centre which provides care and attention for people with terminal cancer and other debilitating conditions. The largest of it’s kind in the North East of England caring for over 400 patients every year. Without the services of Marie Curie, the lives of families across the North East would be considerably worse position. The free care which Marie Curie provides is an important service which is covered by the donations of patrons and the public.

The treking doesn’t stop with Kilimanjaro as in September of 2015, a group is looking to take their cause to the Rocky Mountains in Canada in an effort to highlight awareness and raise money for the cancer charity. The group are looking for more people to get involved and take on this epic task next year. This nine day expedition will be heading over some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world with beautiful lakes and breath taking glaciers it is sure to be an amazing adventure.

Fundraiser, Katie Searles, said: “The Kilimanjaro trek was such an amazing experience to be part of. The whole group showed such determination and it was clear to see how much they enjoyed it. They should be so proud of themselves and their achievements. I know the Canadian Rockies will be just as exciting and challenging and hope that many more people will join us for the challenge.”
