The Stanley Family Fun Day, the second of three fundraising events by the Stanley’s Children In Need Group and held at the South Moor Sports and Community Club in Quaking Houses on August 9th, was a tremendous success and offered something for all tastes and ages.
The group, founded by local teenager Lewis Christie and other like minded local people, to promote the more positive side of life in Stanley following a series of events, such as the double high-street fires and other negative events in the town.
The Fun Day offered a wide and varied attractions that ranged from a selection of fairground rides and side shows, kindly provided by O’Brien’s Fun Fairs, to traditional food and drinks suppliers from the likes of “Hot Stuff”. A traditional hot dog and burger truck that evoked all of the sensations of outdoor eating. Namely, that amazing smell of onions and hot dogs being prepared on an open grill.
Then, on the main field, the attractions varied from the attendance of the South Moor Neighbourhood police Team who posed for photographs with local youngsters and also both modern police vehicles and an old police van that has featured in TV series, “Heartbeat”,
There was a dog agility course, which proved extremely popular with locals bringing their dogs along to take part and to get chipped, free of charge, as well.
There were games and activities for both young and old including Sumo suit wrestling, football, and a very special tug of war competition that saw a special appearance by Minnie and Mickey Mouse that saw “Team Minnie” become the triumphant team.
Plus, both along the periphery of the main club building there were tombola and raffle stalls and, along with those inside, proved to be extremely popular.
And, despite the uncertain weather, the event attracted not only locals, but visitors from Stanley, Leadgate, Consett and even a group of families from South Shields.
Overall, the second of Stanley’s Children in Need events was a success and now plans are well underway for the main event, due to take place at the North Durham Academy in Stanley on November 14th, and that will feature bands, various attractions and an appearance by members of the 99th Garrison, the regions foremost Star Wars costumed charity fundraisers.
