The “Targeted Business Improvement Fund” is a project provided by Durham County Council.

The objective of this funding is to help Landlords to improve property in the Town Centre.

Consett Front Street has many hot Food Takeaways and it was suggested that supplying graphics on the shutters would make the street more attractive to shoppers and visitors during the day.

Due to the heritage and history of the town, it was decided that it would be important to have images of the area’s historically significant buildings displayed.

Once such image of the CIC General Offices is displayed on Golden Pizza’s Front shutters and makes for an impressive aesthetic.

CIC Shutters

Arnold Parkin from the Consett Heritage site provided the image of Barclays Bank and Woolworths.

It was decided to keep the CIC on the front shutter and use the Barclays photo on the side with another photograph of Front Street taken from the traffic lights looking down toward the Consett Iron Company.

Local firms have mainly been used as well as a reputable company from Middlesbrough who manufactured and fitted the graphics which are applied with a powder coating.

The Images have been met with a very positive response from the local community.

Many Landlords have been offered this funding and have been encouraged to use an agent, who will get the necessary planning and building requirements.

40 Front Street is the first of hopefully many businesses that have took advantage of this great initiative and we hope that many more businesses and Landlords will use this opportunity to display these great photographs.

There are many areas of Consett that would look fantastic with these shutters including other parts of Front St, Middle St, and Victoria Road.

If you are a Landlord or Local business and would like to obtain more information about this project then please don’t hesitate to contact Angela Mullholland / Dawn Reed from Durham County Council on 03000 261073

Big thanks to Marlene Boyles for all the above information.
