A drag artist and an Elvis impersonator will be among those displaying their talents in a show to raise cash for a cancer charity. Consett’s Got Talent is due to take place at the Grove and Moorside Community Club on Saturday, 13th August, at six pm. All the money raised will be donated to McMillan Cancer Support.

The organisers of the show are twenty-seven-year-old Jess Marshall and twenty-six-year-old Lee Brannigan, also known as the drag artist Bella Bluebell. The original aim of the show was to support both of their mothers as they battled against cancer. Jess’s mum, Jane, who has now finished her treatment, will be coming to the show, but Lee’s mum, Julie, sadly did not survive her fight with the disease and passed away in April at the age of just fifty-three.

The show will include plenty of singing and dancing. And the contestants will be judged by a celebrity panel, which will include Zoe Birkett of Pop Idol and Big Brother fame, Vin Welch, who has starred in Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Heart Beat, and the karaoke star Stanley Elvis. In addition to doing Pop Idol and Big Brother, Birkett has had a top twenty hit and starred in panto and the West End. Welch has also appeared in the TV dramas The Moth, Clay, and Inspector George Gently. Stanley Elvis is a well-known figure in local pubs and clubs.

The event will feature a range of games and stalls. The winner of the jackpot raffle prize will receive a free holiday in Agadir, Morocco. Tickets cost ten pounds and can be purchased from Gypsy’s Kitchen, TLC Clothing or the Grove Club.

McMillan Cancer Support aim to help those facing cancer right from the moment they are diagnosed through all aspects of their treatment. They also aim to support professionals working with cancer sufferers and to provide expert up-to-date information to help all those affected by the disease. The charity was founded in 1911 by a young man called Douglas McMillan with his ten-pound inheritance after his father had died of cancer.
