Consett’s Sleeping Beauty Panto Breaks all Records

leah-bell-lorraine-crosbyThe Consett Empire has officially kicked off its panto season. Sleeping Beauty opened on Friday, and is already the fastest-selling pantomime ever held at the theatre.

Sleeping Beauty, which will run until 31st December, is produced and directed by Leah Bell. Ms Bell has directed and produced every pantomime staged at the Consett Empire for the last five years.

Nicola Dailly, marketing and arts programme manager for Leisureworks, the trust which manages the Empire, said, “We’re so proud of how far we’ve come with establishing the Empire’s pantomime as a production renowned for offering top quality entertainment for all.”

“It’s a testament to Leah’s many skills that she is able to continually produce bigger and better productions that continue to amaze and break box office records.”

Sleeping Beauty is described as a family show which should delight people of all ages. Along with its fantastical glittering costumes and the side-splitting antics of its characters, the play also promises to add an up-to-date twist to the traditional Sleeping Beauty story.

Leah Bell commented, “Our shows are always full of surprises and we’ve got plenty in store for this year.”

“All I’m saying is – if you don’t like getting wet, stay away from the front!”

The panto stars Lorraine Crosby, who sang on the 1993 Meat Loaf smash I’d Do Anything for Love (But I won’t do that). Ms Crosby has also sung with Bonnie Tyler and appeared on the TV talent shows X Factor and The Voice. In Sleeping Beauty, she plays the evil fairy godmother Maleficent.
