People in and around Consett – and in the Durham Dales – are being urged to get active to improve their levels of fitness. A number of public walking, running and cycling events are coming up to enable people to get out into the fresh air and improve their health.

In partnership with English Athletics and County Durham Sport, Durham County Council is putting on its Couch to 5K programme, which aims to get complete beginners interested in running.

The Couch to 5K courses will start off with a mix of walking and running in order to gradually build up people’s fitness and endurance.

The courses are due to start at Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre at 6.00 pm on Monday 24th April, at Shildon Leisure Centre at 6 pm on Tuesday 25th April, and on Friday 5th May outside the Civic Centre in Crook at 9.15 am.

Another Couch to 5K course will begin on Tuesday 9th May at 5.30 pm from Leadgate Community Centre in Consett.

A weekly walking group has also been established, which will begin at Teesdale Leisure Centre on Tuesday 25th April at 9.30 am.

There are also courses aimed at encouraging people to get back on their bikes.

A six-week course – aimed at inexperienced cyclists and those who haven’t been in the saddle for a long time – will start at Blackhill and Consett Park on Wednesday 26th April between 12.15 pm and 1.30 pm, with bikes and helmets provided.

The same course will be available at Teesdale Leisure Centre, kicking off on 26th April between 10.00 am and 11.15 am.
