Could your dog scoop a prize for having the waggiest tail? Or is it more likely to win an award for closely resembling its owner?

Well, if you take your dog to the beautiful Weardale hamlet of Killhope this weekend, you could easily be heading home with a prize or two.

On Saturday 6th May, a fun dog show will be taking place at Killhope’s lead mining museum.

Entries will close at 12.30 pm and the judging will start at 1.00 pm. There will be gifts for every entrant and special prizes for the winners in each category, the best dog in the show and the winner of the junior handler section. The top four mutts will all receive rosettes.

There will be a charge of £1 per category entered and all owners and dogs taking part in the competition will be given discounted entry to the museum.

The dog show’s categories will include:

  • Junior handler (under 16)
  • Any variety puppy (under 12 months)
  • Any variety veteran (over seven years)
  • Any variety pedigree dog
  • Any variety pedigree bitch
  • Any variety non-pedigree dog
  • Best trick
  • Best rescue
  • Waggiest tail
  • Most like its owner
  • The one the judges would like to take home

The winners in each category will then compete for the best dog in the show.

Killhope is an award-winning 19th century mining museum located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the North Pennines.

Visitors can experience the life and work of the lead mining families who used to live in the area. You can see a working waterwheel, take an underground mining tour, try on Victorian clogs and clothes, and admire art installations.

You can take scenic walks around the museum and even try to spot some of the area’s rare red squirrels.

The museum at Killhope is open from 10.30 pm to 5.00 pm seven days a week between April and October.
