If you’d like to share your latest paragliding, hiking or climbing escapades – or would rather just sit comfortably while someone else speaks about their incredible feats of endurance – you might enjoy a visit to Durham Adventure Festival.

The festival – which will take place in Durham City from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th April – will include a number of intriguing guest speakers.

Among them will be ultra-endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont. Mark will talk about his 2017 world-record-breaking cycle ride, which saw him peddling 18,000 miles around the world in less than 80 days.

Durham Adventure Festival will also feature talks from mountaineer Andy Cave, runner Elise Downing and Dave Cornthwaite, who is undertaking a series of journeys using different types of motor-propelled transport.

But all attendees are invited to share their stories in the festival’s ‘base camp’, located in Durham’s Gala Theatre. No story is considered too modest or small and participants are encouraged to speak about topics ranging from sports they’ve tried for the first time to charity challenges they’ve been involved in.

Anyone who would like to speak about their adventures should email rosie.bailey@durham.gov.uk as soon as possible as limited spaces are available on each day.

The festival will also boast a busy film schedule, with films on subjects such as big tree climbing and paragliding. A number of family-orientated films will also be shown.

Durham Adventure Festival is presented in partnership with the Kendal Mountain Festival.

Durham County Council’s service manager for place and experience, Robin Byers, said, “This is a magnificent county. From wild moors to great beaches, wonderful forests to large Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we are a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds.”

“We want the festival to be an informal, fun and inspiring place to be, where speakers and audiences are all there for the same reason … to share their experiences and love for adventure and exploration.”

“In between the ticketed sessions, we would love people to relax over a craft beer or two and enjoy the stories and adventures of their fellow enthusiasts.”
