Free Halloween family fun will be on offer in Consett later this week.

The Halloween in the Park event will take place on Thursday 25th October in Blackhill and Consett Park. Pumpkin carving sessions will be held from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm, from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm and from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm.

In addition to being a chance to create spooktacular Halloween decorations, the sessions will have an environmental message, with tips being given on composting and how to reduce food waste.

Food going to waste is a problem throughout the Western world, with some estimates suggesting that up to 40% of food in the USA is wasted.

As well as getting stuck into the pumpkin carving, families can also explore Blackhill and Consett Park and enjoy its autumnal beauty.

Durham County Council’s service manager for sport, leisure and the outdoors, Paul Branch, said, “Pumpkin in the Park means there is even more reason to explore Blackhill and Consett Park this half-term.”

“Not only can your children enjoy a typical Halloween craft, but the whole family can discover environmentally friendly ways to make use of leftovers, whether that be creating a tasty pumpkin soup or making some compost for the garden.”

Though the pumpkin carving sessions are free, booking is essential. To reserve a place, please telephone 03000 266 104 or email wasteaware@durham.gov.uk.

Halloween is the UK’s second biggest retail festival after Christmas. It is estimated that 10 million pumpkins are grown in the UK each year, with 95% of them ending up as Halloween lanterns and 5% being used for pies, soups, casseroles, curries and other dishes.
