Local people have come together to give Consett a thorough spruce up.

Durham County Council’s award-winning Operation Spruce Up campaign helps towns and villages organise community-led clean-ups. The clean-up can include litter picking, drainage clearance, repairs to fencing and benches, pruning trees, and the planting of greenery.

Consett is the latest area to benefit from Operation Spruce Up. Consett’s operation was a real team effort, with local residents, police community support officers, schools, Durham County Council staff and neighbourhood wardens all pitching in.

Teachers and pupils from St Patrick’s RC Primary school helped to plant an incredible 10,000 mixed crocus bulbs. The bulbs will blossom into colourful spring displays in coming years.

Durham County Council’s anti-litter mascot Tidy Ted was out to lend a paw and encourage everybody. Also on the scene were Cllr Brian Stephens, the council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, as well as local county councillors Cllr Owen Temple and Cllr Alex Watson.

Cllr Stephens said, “It is great to see everyone pull together to give their areas the attention needed and see people taking pride in where they live.”

“The Consett Spruce Up adds to a series of successful cleaning days across the county, with 14 communities taking part in the campaign so far.”

Durham County Council’s head of direct services, Oliver Sherratt, said, “It has also been a real team effort from many of our departments, with involvement from the clean and green team, regeneration, highways and the civic pride team.”

The Operation Spruce Up campaign has received national recognition, scooping the Campaign of the Year prize at the Keep Britain Tidy Awards 2018.
