Stockings, robin redbreasts and mince pies – that’s how children from Consett have been describing a County Durham Christmas to pals from other countries.

The Consett youngsters have been taking part in a programme in which kids from different parts of Europe send each other Christmas decorations.

Consett Infants School and Ramshaw Primary School have been participating in the European Christmas Decoration Exchange initiative, which is organised by Direct Durham and supported by the European Commission.

The Consett kids have sent their handmade decorations to children in 20 different European countries.

At Consett Infants School, Year Two pupils chose to make decorations featuring red-breasted robins, inspired by the fact these creatures have been declared the UK’s national bird.

The robin decorations, which the children made out of paper plates, will be sent to kids in 30 different locations across Europe.

As part of the European Christmas Decoration Exchange, children in the schools involved will create a fact-file booklet. The booklet will contain information about how Christmas is celebrated in their country or region.

The headteacher of Consett Infants School, Julia Graham, said, “We are delighted to be part of the European Christmas Decoration Exchange and the children are waiting with excitement to receive each packet in the post.”

“This exchange is providing a rich experience for the children and motivating them to learn about other cultures and traditions from first-hand resources.”

Durham County Council’s cabinet member for children’s and young people’s services, Cllr Olwyn Gunn, said, “Ultimately, at the end of this exciting exchange, each participating school will have a tree covered with decorations made by children in other parts of the continent, but most importantly they will also have had the opportunity to learn and share other children’s cultural traditions.”
