A County Durham Cinema is set to screen a range of classic films – by showing a much-loved vintage movie on the first Sunday of every month.

The films – including love stories, comedies and spoof disaster movies – will be shown in Durham City’s Gala Theatre and Cinema.

On Sunday 3rd February at 8.00 pm, 90s romantic comedy Pretty Woman (15) will be gracing the Gala’s screen. Pretty Woman – the film that made Julia Roberts a household name – also stars Richard Gere.

The Gala will be travelling further back in time on Sunday 3rd March at 8.00 pm by showing Casablanca (U). This much-loved classic, made in 1942, stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Sunday 7th April will see a double bill of classic 80s comedy. The evening will kick off with Caddyshack (15) at 6.00 pm, which will be followed by Airplane! (12A) at 8.00 pm.

And the Gala will be sticking with the 80s on Sunday 5th May. At 6.00 pm, the cinema will be showing the hit movie Top Gun (12A), starring Tom Cruise as daring navy pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.

On Sunday 2nd June at 6.00 pm, the Gala will be screening the 1981 horror comedy classic American Werewolf in London (15). The film tells the story of two young American backpackers who are attacked by a werewolf while on holiday in England.

The manager of the Gala Theatre and Cinema, Robin Byers, said, “Our Classic Cinema Studio not only allows people to enjoy the blockbusters of the past on the big screen, but introduces a new generation of film fans to pictures they may not have encountered before.”

“It’s about nostalgia and celebrating films that have shaped the industry.”

Tickets for each screening cost £5.00 – and this price includes a free tea, coffee or soft drink. A special offer is also available for the 80s comedy double bill on 7th April – film fans can watch both movies for just £8.00.
