Children attending the Consett Empire Theatre and Cinema can look forward to an uplifting experience.

Since 2003, the Friends of the Empire have raised a staggering £120,000 for their local theatre, enabling the Empire to invest in features ranging from new seating to cutting-edge audio and lighting gear.

Now the group have spent £1,150 on 72 booster seats – to enhance the view of the action enjoyed by young children and improve their comfort.

The chairman of the Friends of the Empire, Dennis Lavin, said, “We want a trip to the Empire to be a wonderful experience for children.”

“If you instil a love of the theatre in children at a young age, it can last a lifetime and it gets them away from screens and computer games.”

“The last thing we want is for youngsters to be staring at the back of a seat throughout a performance so when we realised the existing booster seats needed replacing, we were keen to help.”

One show Consett’s kids can look forward to is Milkshake! LIVE, Milkshake’s Monkey Musical. The musical will be staged at the Consett Empire on Saturday 2nd March at 12.30 pm and 3.00 pm, with tickets costing £15.50.

Tickets for those under 16 are priced at £13.50 and family tickets are available for £54 (for two adults and two children).

Other family shows coming up at the Consett Empire include The Very Hungry Caterpillar on Saturday 20th July at 1.30 pm and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly on Saturday 12th October at 2.30 pm.

The arts programme manager of the Consett Empire Theatre and Cinema, Nicola Dailly, said, “It’s wonderful to witness children experiencing the magic of the theatre, which is why we are so grateful to the Friends for their latest donation.”

“We have some fantastic family shows coming up this year and these booster seats will ensure little ones have the best view possible.”
