Kids from a County Durham primary school have been filling up a time capsule for future generations to discover.

The capsule contains items like tickets to the recent Cricket World Cup England vs New Zealand match at County Durham’s Riverside Stadium and posters from this year’s Durham Miners’ Gala.

Sherburn Primary School is currently undergoing renovation work, with parts of the building’s outer wall being replaced and new doors and windows being put in.

During the repairs – which are being carried out by Durham County Council’s Building and Facilities Maintenance Service – site foreman Kevin Springett had the idea of concealing a time capsule in the school’s wall.

Kevin’s idea was enthusiastically taken up by the children. As well as the World Cup tickets and Miners’ Gala posters, a school brochure, school lunch menus and details of the pupils’ favourite activities have been put in the capsule.

Members of the school council met last week at Sherburn Primary School, on Cookshold Lane in the village of Sherburn, for a ceremony during which the time capsule was placed in one of the new wall panels.

The school’s headteacher, Sue Cornforth, said, “The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed writing about themselves, their hobbies and interests.”

“We have been extremely lucky to have had support with our project from members of the local community.”

“We would like to say a special thank you to the Bishop of Durham, Durham County Council Chairman and the Mayor of Durham, Cllr Katie Corrigan, and Roberta Blackman-Woods, our MP, who all wrote inspiring letters.”

“We hope that future pupils and their parents will someday enjoy looking through the time capsule and that it will provide them with a snapshot of school life in 2019.”

Many of the items in the time capsule were sourced by school governor Adam Foster, who approached individuals and organisations to ask for interesting objects and artefacts.

Durham County Council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, Cllr Olwyn Gunn, said, “These building improvements, made by our Building and Facilities Maintenance Service, show we are continuing to invest in our schools to ensure we provide the best possible education for children in County Durham.”
