County Durham’s Christmas shoppers will be able to enjoy free parking in the evenings in the run-up to the festive period, thereby saving a few precious quid.

The return of the ‘Free after 3’ offer means that parking in all Durham County Council controlled parking spaces will be free after 3.00 pm every day in December.

The council’s carparks will be free of charge as will on-street parking spaces. Stickers will be placed on parking meters to let motorists know about the offer.

In addition to the ‘Free after 3’ scheme, parking will be free after 10.00 am on Saturday December 7th in all Durham County Council carparks and on-street parking spaces.

December 7th is also Small Business Saturday, a day on which people are encouraged to shop locally and support their communities’ small businesses.

Durham County Council’s parking and transport infrastructure team leader, Kieron Moralee, said, “Every year we try to help with one less cost for people, as the run up to Christmas is a busy time and can be expensive.”

“Free after 3 also supports local shops who rely on footfall for a prosperous festive period. The free parking after 10.00 am on 7th December encourages people to shop local and support our small businesses.”

Drivers are reminded, however, that payment machines will not be turned off during the free hours and any payments made cannot be refunded.

Small Business Saturday is a national, grassroots campaign that celebrates the UK’s small businesses and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’.
