Enjoy magical Christmas celebrations at Beamish, The Living Museum of the North this festive season. 

During Christmas at Beamish, which runs from 27th November to 24th December 2021, visitors can enjoy truly traditional festivities at the museum, including an exciting Elf Trail, yuletide treats, fairground rides and enchanting Christmas celebrations through time.

“Christmas is always a fantastic time at Beamish. Visitors can see their favourite parts of the museum beautifully decorated and take part in festive fun.” 

“There’s a chance to visit Father Christmas (pre-booked Grotto ticket essential, subject to availability), savour the aroma of delicious homemade goods cooking on the range and listen to merry music. So be sure to book your visit to Beamish and complete those important Christmas to dos before the big day! 

“As with all daytime events, visitors can use their Unlimited Pass or Friends of Beamish membership to enjoy our Christmas at Beamish activities.” 

From Georgian times right the way through to the 1950s, hop aboard one of Beamish’s traditional trams or buses and be immersed in Christmas through time – the perfect way to count down to the big day!

During the Christmas opening weekend on 27th and 28th November, Father Christmas will travel around the museum during the day in a traditional vehicle, be sure to give him a cheer as he passes by!  

Father Christmas will also be escorted by a marching band on Saturday, 27th November. Keep an eye out for him as he makes his way through The 1900s Town and around site. 

Every day the museum is open during the festive season, visitors can wander through Elf Wood in Birch Wood and spy the mischievous elves in their houses.  

Have a go at the Elf Trail and spot the naughty elves hiding around the museum. The trail will be available to download on Beamish’s website, www.beamish.org.uk. 

Try the delicious yuletide treats in the sweet shop and bakery in The 1900s Town, and visit the homes of Ravensworth Terrace and admire the traditional festive decorations. Be sure to buy that perfect present from the market stalls in the street – the museum has added a range of new Beamish-inspired products, including items especially for Christmas! Visit the Gift Shop on Beamish’s website to see the fantastic festive range. 

Have a go on the gallopers at The Fairground (small charge applies) and pop up to Pockerley to learn about a traditional Georgian Christmas, including 1820s celebratory food and drink. 

Visit Francis Street in The 1900s Pit Village and discover how the miners and their families celebrated Christmas in Edwardian times, enjoy a warming hot chocolate, and don’t forget to pay the pit ponies a festive visit! 

Discover a forties Christmas at The 1940s Farm, see how the season was celebrated at home during the Second World War when rations were in place, and find out about festive 50s celebrations in the welfare hall, the first 1950s Town building to open as part of the Remaking Beamish project. 

Visit Father Christmas in his Grotto at Rowley Station Goods Yard every day that the museum is open from 27th November to 24th December.  

Grotto tickets must be booked in advance online and visitors aged five and over must also have an accompanying timeslot ticket (both subject to availability) as well as a Beamish Unlimited Pass/Friends of Beamish membership to come to the museum. No Grotto tickets will be available to buy from the museum on the day of your visit. 

Grotto tickets are £6 (0-16 years) and include a small traditional toy. Tickets for Father Christmas’ Grotto are available to book online now (subject to availability). For more information and to book visit www.beamish.org.uk.

During weekends and local school holidays during the festive season, see Father Christmas travel around the museum site in different forms of traditional transport… will it be an Armstrong Whitworth car? A horse and carriage? Or a bicycle? Be sure to give him a big wave and a cheer as he makes his way round! 

Enjoy live music during weekend afternoons in the bandstand in The 1900s Town. Plus, pop up to the Tea Rooms in The 1900s Town and enjoy delicious Christmas dinner, with all the trimmings (Christmas dinner only available during weekends and local school holidays). 

Take a ride on The Waggonway in The 1820s Landscape during weekends from 27th November until 12th December then daily from 18th to 24th December. Operating dates and times from 27th December onwards to be confirmed.

Families will also be able to enjoy a video call with Father Christmas, as he sits by the fireside in his cosy Edwardian cottage at the museum. They will also have the chance to invite other family members to join them on the call. Video calls last up to 10 minutes and take place in the comfort of people’s homes and do not involve a visit to the museum.  

The museum’s Twelfth Night Celebrationsrun from 27th December 2021 to 2nd January 2022. Enjoy live music, traditional food, dancing and first footing – the perfect outing to blow away the post-Christmas cobwebs!

Beamish has a range of COVID-19 Secure health and hygiene measures in place across the museum, with the safety of visitors, staff and volunteers as the top priority and in line with industry best practice and guidance issued by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions. These include pre-booked timeslot entry tickets, use of face masks, reduced capacity to manage the number of visitors and allow space, enhanced cleaning, hand sanitiser stations, and contactless card payments. The museum has been awarded the “We’re Good To Go” standard. 

The museum is continuing to follow government and public health COVID-19 safety guidance and reserves the right to alter events, activities, facilities, operations and opening times without prior notice.
