North West Durham Labour Party New Year Message

2021 was another hard year for many people in North West Durham and the country as a whole.

As we look back on the last 12 months, we’ve seen levelling up let downs, broken promises, a cut to Universal Credit and people feeling abandoned by the Government and County Council particularly following Storm Arwen. It is 2 years since the general election and it’s very clear that our Conservative MP is not delivering for North West Durham.

As we look forward to 2022 we know that the Labour Party needs to continue to work hard to rebuild the faith which voters used to have in us. We can criticise the Government on a daily basis but that will not win the hearts and minds of voters. We want to be working with our local communities and the people within them. We want to hear from you and know what is important to you, even if that means listening to some harsh truths. We accept that the most important lessons are often learnt during difficult conversations.

We’ve been working hard over the last 2 years. We ran a nationally recognised coronavirus assistance scheme that helped 100s of people locally when the pandemic was at its height, we’ve reached out to residents via phone banks, we’ve held the local MP to account on numerous issues, fundraised for local food banks and we’ve continued to try to be accessible to local people who have needed our support. When people need us we will do all we can to help, especially when people are being let down by their MP and the Government.

You’ll find us in every corner of North West Durham in the coming months. Our County Councillors will be working to push Durham County Council to put the people of County Durham first, instead of pandering to their friends in Government.

County Durham, and the whole North East, is being failed and put to the bottom of the list when it comes to real investment and opportunities. North West Durham Labour Party will be working harder than ever to learn how you think we can, and should, improve things for local people, and to campaign for a Government that cares for all the people in our area – not just a favoured few.
