George Ledger – Consett in Focus

Brewing beer is a blend of science and art, with a history stretching back over 12,000 years. The process is simple yet profound: heat water and grain, boil with hops, cool, ferment with yeast, and carbonate.

In Consett, The Grey Horse on Sherburn Terrace has been brewing since 2005. David took the reins as manager in 2018, with Ian joining him a couple of years later. Together, they operate as Consett Ale Works, producing four distinct beers: Steeltown Bitter, White Hot Ale, Red Dust Ruby Ale, and Porter.

While most of their beer is enjoyed right at The Grey Horse, some is bottled, allowing fans to savour these local brews at home.

Consett Ale Works continues to uphold the tradition of brewing, offering a true taste of Consett’s heritage in every pint.
