David Leck – Consett in Focus
When it comes to fresh, quality produce, Relmans has been a staple in Consett for 27 years. This family-run business, led by Chris, his wife Louise, and their son Louie, is dedicated to providing top-notch fruit and vegetables to the local community. Their shop on Middle Street is a vibrant hub, drawing in customers from early in the morning with colourful displays both inside and outside.
In an era dominated by supermarkets and online shopping, it’s refreshing to see a small, independent greengrocer thriving. Relmans’ success is a testament to the family’s hard work, deep knowledge of the trade, and their commitment to excellent service.

Chris’s day starts long before most of us are awake. At around 4:00 am, he heads to the North East Fruit & Veg Market to hand-pick the freshest produce for the day. After loading up the vans, it’s back to the shop to unload and carefully arrange the fruits and vegetables for customers. But their service doesn’t stop there—Relmans also supplies local farm shops, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses, ensuring that their orders are packed, loaded, and delivered with care.
Relmans is a shining example of a traditional business offering not only first-class produce but also outstanding customer service. My morning with them was a delightful reminder of the value that independent, family-run businesses bring to the local community.
