Editorial June 2025: Grounded in Community, Guided by Conversation

It’s been a month of important conversations. After last issue’s piece on the proposed new Consett Hospital, we were reminded just how much people care about this town and how many are willing to take the time to share their thoughts, hopes, and concerns. We want to thank everyone who reached out. Whether you agreed, disagreed, or just asked questions, your voice matters, and it helps keep local stories honest, useful, and relevant.

This issue is full of people doing good things in quiet, meaningful ways.

There’s Ian Fewnwick, who’s spent nearly 20 years keeping Leadgate clean. Mechelle Jacques and Amanda McCormack, who’ve helped build one of the region’s most respected dog training groups. The team at Shotley Bridge Nursery School, who show how values like respect and empathy can shape a child’s start in life. And the ever-evolving work of people like Darren Walsh at Greencroft Bottling, who took every opportunity to learn and grow and now helps keep a major local employer running smoothly.

We’ve also included an important piece from the Police and Crime Commissioner about young driver safety, and a look ahead to Willow Burn Hospice’s upcoming planning workshops, offering practical help for anyone thinking about the future with care and clarity.

And we honour two people in particular: Ken Brown, a Korean War veteran whose life was one of service, courage, and resilience. And Andrew Fiddes, now leading Consett Citizens Choir with heart and humility, preparing a gala concert to honour the memory of Joyce Shaw.

We’re always grateful to those who let us share their stories, and we’re always looking for more. If you know someone who deserves a little recognition or you have a story of your own to tell, please get in touch. This magazine only exists because of people like you.

Thanks for reading and for being part of what keeps this small publication going month after month.

Yours sincerely,
Barry Kirkham
and everyone who helps bring Consett Magazine to life.
