Editorial August 2025: The Art of Living Local

This month’s issue is about care – the kind that’s stitched, shared, and quietly passed from hand to hand.

It’s in the fine threads of Janice Hutchinson’s felt artwork, where wool becomes memory, story, and landscape. And in the scissors and smiles of Salon 19, where generations have gathered not just for trims, but for companionship, cuppas, and consistency in a changing world.

We’ve met locals who are shaping futures – like Gabbie Jefferson, whose journey from apprentice to valued team member shows what’s possible with the right support. And like Melanie at Baby Grows, who brought vital care closer to home, turning personal mission into a lifeline for Consett families.

This issue also steps onto the pitch with Turfcare Specialists, where decades of hard work have helped communities play safer, better, and longer. And we head out with the Consett Lions – raising funds, supporting inclusive events, and proving yet again that fun and purpose can go hand in hand.

There’s even a story that’s not quite of this world – a mysterious stone, a vanishing bishop, and a book with warnings written in rhyme. Let’s just say, if you visit an old church this summer, tread lightly.

As ever, we’re proud to highlight what makes Consett tick – the small businesses, big-hearted volunteers, and everyday efforts that keep our town moving forward while staying grounded in what matters.

If you’re holding this magazine, you’re holding more than paper. You’re holding stories shaped by your neighbours – stories you won’t find elsewhere.

Thanks for reading, supporting, and sharing. Got something to say? Say it loud – we’re here to help you tell it. Submit content here.

Yours sincerely,
Barry Kirkham
