On Saturday 5th July, members of the Consett & District Heritage Initiative took part in a special event at the Stephenson Steam Railway in North Tyneside, commemorating the restoration of the Consett No. 10 locomotive.
This historic engine was scratch-built at Consett Steelworks’ own engine shed workshops and ran for many years on the company’s railway line.

The group’s display featured rare photographs of the railway and steelworks, drawing considerable interest from visitors keen to learn more about Consett’s proud industrial heritage.
These images, along with a wealth of other local history, will also be showcased at the “Consett: A Steel Town” Exhibition & Open Day on Tuesday 16th September 2025 at The Lodge, Blackhill & Consett Park (10 am–3.30 pm, free entry).
Visitors can enjoy a Q&A session with heritage experts, handle historical artefacts, and browse albums of old photographs from each local community.
Other groups, including the Northumberland & Durham Family History Society, Building Self-Belief, and History of Consett Steelworks, will also be present.
Refreshments will be available, and all are welcome.
