A not-for-profit boxing club in Consett is reaching even more members of the community, thanks to a recent funding boost.

Steeltown Spartans has received £1,500 from the Karbon Homes Community Investment Fund, which is being used to purchase new equipment including boxing bags, gloves, weights, and head guards — supporting members’ wellbeing, confidence and physical fitness.

This equipment will help them to put on more classes for people in the community, catering for all levels and abilities from a diverse range of ages.

Stephen Wilkinson, a Volunteer Coordinator and Fundraiser for the club, was thrilled to receive the funding,

“The club is growing strength to strength each week and already has a real family feel – there’s a very inclusive and supportive environment throughout the club.

“The funding from Karbon Homes will allow us to increase that offer to even more people in the community. It will mean we can offer more tailored classes catering for individuals of all abilities, so no one would feel overwhelmed by starting something new. The additional income from the classes will also allow us to provide discounted memberships for people who would like to attend but struggle with the cost of living.”

The club, which became affiliated with England Boxing in July 2024, provides fully inclusive boxing and fitness sessions from its gym on John Street in Consett.

Paul Moralee, Karbon Homes Community Investment Manager said:

“We’re always on the lookout for projects that help strengthen our communities and support the health and wellbeing of our residents. Steeltown Spartans Boxing Club already do fantastic work in Consett and we’re thrilled to be able to help them increase their provision.

“Stephen is also a Housing Officers at Karbon so he knows people in the community well and how much something like the boxing club can benefit them. It promotes an affordable way to live a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally. It can also help to reduce anti-social behaviour by providing a positive way for people to spend their time, make friends and socialise.”
