From open skies to the blooming moorlands, the North East of England offers a stunning variety of birdlife that captivates both visitors and seasoned nature lovers alike, making it a true haven for Wildlife Photography in North East England.

Local photographer Stephen Finch has beautifully captured two of the North East of England’s most iconic birds: the Red Kite and the Red Grouse.

The Grace of the Red Kite

Once nearly extinct in England, the Red Kite (Milvus milvus) has made a remarkable comeback and now soars freely over parts of Consett, County Durham and Northumberland. With its forked tail, reddish-brown plumage and graceful flight, this striking bird of prey is a favourite sight among walkers, cyclists and wildlife watchers exploring the region’s open countryside.

The Red Grouse: Master of the Moor

Distinctive for its russet-brown plumage and fiery red eye combs, the Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) is one of the few truly native birds to the British Isles, a subspecies found nowhere else in the world. Unlike many upland birds that migrate, the Red Grouse is a non-migratory, year-round resident, perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of the UK’s heather moorlands.

It feeds almost exclusively on young heather shoots and relies on these habitats not only for food, but also for nesting and shelter. Commonly seen in areas like the North Pennines, Durham Dales, and the uplands of Northumberland, the Red Grouse is a defining species of Britain’s high moorland landscapes and plays a significant role in the ecology, and rural traditions, of the region.

This bird is well-camouflaged against its moorland home, but Stephen’s close-up photography offers a rare, intimate look at the intricate detail of its plumage and presence.

Through a Local Lens: Stephen Finch Captures Iconic Wildlife of the North East

Stephen Finch’s photography offers more than just striking visuals, it provides a powerful narrative about the richness of local wildlife and the urgent need to preserve it. His images showcase the untamed beauty of the North East, from the graceful flight of Red Kites to the earthy stillness of Red Grouse nestled in the moorlands.

By documenting these moments with care and clarity, Stephen highlights the importance of safeguarding the habitats that support this incredible biodiversity. His work stands as a meaningful example of wildlife photography in North East England, helping to raise awareness and inspire appreciation for the natural world around us.

Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher, a photography enthusiast, or someone who simply values the environment, his photographs remind us that wild, wonderful nature is never far away, it’s waiting to be seen, valued, and protected.
