Nestled in the serene heart of Derwent Valley, Little Barn of Calm has become a place of peace, joy, and genuine transformation for children who struggle with anxiety, stress and social pressure. What began as one mother’s way to help her daughter find calm has blossomed into a wonderful community resource that’s changing lives.

A Personal Beginning With a Big Heart

“We started Little Barn of Calm because my daughter struggled with anxiety,” the founder explains. “Being outside with the animals really calmed her.”

Today, that simple idea has grown into a welcoming sanctuary where children can simply be themselves — free of judgement and full of encouragement.

The barn’s doors are open to children from all backgrounds, especially those who might feel overwhelmed in traditional environments. The founder’s years of experience supporting neurodiverse children in a nursery setting have been invaluable in shaping the barn’s compassionate and child‑centred approach.

Meet the Calm Crew

Little Barn of Calm boasts an affectionate and diverse range of animals that make every visit a new adventure:

  • 🐐 Two young goats
  • 🐇 Six rabbits
  • 🐹 Two guinea pigs
  • 🐎 Three horses
  • 🐔 Around 40 chickens

Kids love feeding, grooming, and caring for the animals — and you can really see the magic happen when they connect.

A Place for Growth (and Giggles)

Children often arrive hesitant, quiet or anxious — but something remarkable happens here.

“It’s just them and the animals. There’s nobody else judging them,” the founder shares. Many parents and teachers have noticed huge changes: children who were once timid and reserved now smile, laugh and interact with a confidence they don’t show in other places.

One teacher observed, “They’re not like this at school. They’re quiet there. But here they think they own the place!”

That change is exactly what Little Barn of Calm was created for — a relaxed environment where encouragement replaces pressure, and curiosity replaces anxiety.

Learning Through Nature

Some visitors are initially unsure about getting muddy, wet or outside their comfort zone. But here, every new experience is done at a pace that feels safe and fun.

Children feed guinea pigs, groom animals, and even help with light chores — all in ways that build responsibility and self‑esteem. One parent shared how her daughter “likes to cuddle the rabbits and feed them… which makes her feel calm, which is nice.”

The barn works closely with schools and the occupational therapy teams at local colleges, who have seen firsthand how this outdoor, animal‑led setting supports emotional and behavioural development.

Confidence and Connection

Some students have even come to Little Barn of Calm as part of work placements. The difference has been remarkable. One placement student, once quiet and withdrawn, is now chatting confidently around campus.

“It’s boosting their confidence,” said a staff member. And that’s the heart of the barn’s mission: giving children the tools to grow, engage and thrive.

Support That Makes It Possible

None of this would be possible without community guidance and practical support. The founder is quick to praise her mentor, Michelle:

“Michelle has been amazing. I don’t think I could have done it without her. She helped me get registered with Companies House and really supports me through all of it.”

Together, they’ve created not just a project — but a place that feels like a second home to so many children and families.

A Rewarding Mission

“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved,” the founder says. “I love it — it’s not like a job. I just wanted to help as many children as possible.”

And she is. Little Barn of Calm is creating calm, confidence, joy and connection — one visit at a time.
