At Shotley Bridge Nursery School, we pride ourselves on providing a professional, nurturing, and mindful environment where children feel safe, respected, and supported to thrive. Beyond delivering a rich and stimulating curriculum, we are deeply committed to promoting good health and wellbeing, helping our youngest learners build positive habits that will support them throughout their lives.
With the seasonal focus on colds and flu, we see this as a valuable opportunity to highlight how everyday nursery practice plays a vital role in supporting children’s physical and emotional wellbeing.
Mindful Hygiene Through Meaningful Routines
In line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidance, we encourage children to develop essential self-help skills that promote independence and confidence. Hygiene routines such as handwashing are embedded naturally into our day and approached in a way that is respectful, engaging, and age-appropriate.
Our familiar handwashing song —
“Top and down, top and bottom…”
guides children through each step, making the process fun while reinforcing effective hygiene habits. Through repetition and gentle modelling, children begin to understand not only how to wash their hands, but why it matters.
Fresh Air, Movement, and Nature’s Benefits
At Shotley Bridge Nursery School, we take an indicative and balanced approach to children’s health. While it is common to believe that children should remain indoors during colder months, we actively embrace the benefits of fresh air and outdoor play all year round.
Outdoor experiences support physical development, boost mood, strengthen immune systems, and encourage curiosity and resilience. When children are dressed appropriately for the weather, time spent outside can be incredibly beneficial—even during the colder seasons.
By respecting children’s natural need to move, explore, and connect with nature, we nurture both their physical health and emotional wellbeing.
A Nurturing Approach to Wellbeing
Our approach to health is rooted in professional practice and a deep understanding of children’s developmental needs. We do not aim to eliminate illness entirely, but rather to support children in developing resilience, independence, and a positive relationship with self-care.
Through mindful routines, respectful interactions, outdoor learning, and nurturing relationships, we create an environment where children feel empowered to look after themselves and others.
As we move through the colder months, Shotley Bridge Nursery School remains committed to promoting healthy habits that extend beyond the nursery—supporting children, families, and our wider community in building a strong foundation for lifelong wellbeing.
