TLDR: Consett

Public engagement has opened on a new long term vision for Consett.

  • Durham County Council is developing a Strategic Place Plan for Consett.
  • Residents are being asked what works well in the town and what could improve.
  • Views will help shape future priorities for regeneration and services.
  • Engagement will run for eight weeks through events and outreach.
  • An online survey is open until 5pm on Monday 26 March.

People who live and work in Consett are being invited to help shape a new long term vision for the town, as Durham County Council begins public engagement on its Strategic Place Plan.

The plan is intended to set out a clear direction for Consett’s future, focusing on supporting a thriving local economy while meeting the needs of residents, businesses and visitors.

Strategic Place Plans bring together local priorities into a single agreed vision for each town. They are designed to guide future decision making around regeneration, services and investment, and are underpinned by the council’s wider economic strategy.

Consett joins a number of other County Durham towns where plans are already under development, following earlier engagement in Spennymoor, Durham, Shildon, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Stanley, Chester-le-Street and Crook.

As part of the engagement, residents are being asked to share their views on what works well in Consett, what could be improved, and what they would like the town to look like in the future. The council has said that local feedback will form the foundation of the plan.

Over the next eight weeks, council officers will gather views by speaking to people in the town centre, holding drop in sessions, visiting schools to hear from children and young people, and attending meetings of community groups and local organisations.

Residents can also take part by completing an online survey via the council’s consultation platform at www.letstalkcountydurham.co.uk. The deadline for responses is 5pm on Monday 26 March.

Engagement on the Strategic Place Plan marks an early stage in shaping Consett’s future, with the council emphasising that the vision will be directly informed by local views. Public consultation has also begun separately in Peterlee, which is following the same process.

The site hosts the online survey and details of in person engagement events for Consett. The deadline for responses is 5pm on Monday 26 March.

This is the official engagement channel used by Durham County Council for Strategic Place Plan consultations.
