From Military Service to Serving the School – Meet Ian Pickering

Born in Lanchester and raised in Leadgate, Ian Pickering has dedicated his life to service, music, and community.

He spent 12 years in the Army (including active service in The Gulf, Kosovo, Bosnia & Northern Ireland) and 19 years in the Fusiliers Reserves, travelling the world as both soldier and musician. After 15 years in the Prison Service, Ian found a new calling as caretaker at Our Lady & St Joseph’s Primary School, where he loves working with the children and keeping the school running smoothly.

A lifelong brass musician, Ian plays cornet with the NASUWT Brass Band and performs at Remembrance services across the region — including at St Ives Church, Leadgate.

A true example of dedication, talent, and community spirit.
