Medomsley Environment Group (MEG) are a small group of volunteers in the village who, for several years have been collecting items for recycling.
Collected items include; small household equipment (WEEE) for recycling or repair; small batteries for recycling; hand tools destined for Africa after re-furbishment; plastic tablet blister packs for recycling; books; postage stamps and copper coins for charities and food for local food banks.
Our WEEE collection of small household items often include items such as kitchen equipment (toasters, mixers, hoovers, radios, etc) which could easily be checked, repaired and given to others in the community around Consett – if only we could!
So, following in the footsteps of other community led Repair Cafes around County Durham and neighbouring areas, MEG want to establish a regular ‘repair cafe‘ in Medomsley village.
However, for any successful repair cafe we need volunteers who can and like to repair and tinker with such stuff and are able to ensure repaired electrical items are safe for others to subsequently use (PAT test). Is there anyone out there please who are willing and able to give a couple of hours of their expertise to help in this new venture? We cant do this without you so please contact us at MEG.
Email: [email protected] or contact Alan on 07768907610 or Facebook.
Eventually we would seek to expand our repairing to other stuff like clothes, clocks, furniture, laptops; tool sharpening – well we are only limited by those who are able to help! Once we can establish a cafe in Medomsley we would like to join with other people around Consett to start other cafes.
In a world where energy is expensive, resources are dwindling, money is tight, there is an increasing need to repair and recycle to please can you help in our endevours?
A date for our first Medomsley repair cafe cannot be confirmed until we have identified some volunteer ‘fixers‘ willing to give us a couple of hours one Saturday morning. Initially we would plan for a cafe to take place one the 1st Saturday of a calender month. Which month, well that is up to you ‘fixers’ out there! We have identified a venue and some very limited funds to kick us off.
At our repair cafe why not come, bring items for our recycling collection or chat to us over a cuppa about our plans and what together we could do to the benefit of the environment and our community.
Meanwhile do not bin your old or broken household electrical items. Remember: If it lights up, beeps, or plays a song, it does not belong in the bin! Bring them to our monthly village collection on the 1st Wednesday of every month from 08.30 – 10.30 or take these items to any of the other community electrical collection points around Consett.
Such items may also have a lithium battery and these are increasingly the cause of fires at waste managment sites or bin lorries so should never be put in the domestic bin.
Please contact MEG at [email protected] or look for us on facebook .
